A Holiday Message
Dear Friends,
It is with much thankfulness we look back on 2009 and the year we have spent serving our community. We are so grateful to everyone who supported us financially when the shelter was closed in August. With those funds we were able to continue to rent the house, so that when funding was reinstated in October we could open the doors immediately. Through such generosity the shelter was ready for Caroline and her 2 children when she needed to escape her abusive husband. “Without the shelter,” she stated to her advocate, “we would be homeless. I just can’t take the abuse any longer.”
Due to your generosity we were able to support Kristen who was sexually assaulted by someone she knew a year ago, but never told anyone. Kristen wanted someone to talk to that understood and could help her when she began to have nightmares and feel afraid. The DVSAC Advocate is able to meet her at her high school once a week and offer peer counseling to help her walk through this very difficult time in her life.
Through contributions from individuals, businesses, and organizations, the DVSAC staff and volunteers are able to respond to over 200 crisis calls a month, respond to the hospital when a victim needs some one to support her or him, facilitate support groups for women and children, offer peer counseling to women and men who need help and provide many other much needed services for those experiencing violence in their lives.
We know times are hard, we are feeling it in our own lives. There are many in need, for many different reasons. For those who are in a position to give, there are so many amazing organizations in our community that can effectively utilize monetary gifts throughout the year. The DVSAC is one of those agencies. Your contributions go directly toward those we serve. Your contributions allow us to support, help protect, encourage and empower individuals who are experiencing violence in their lives. Our goal is help those in crisis and then to support efforts to end the violence, to prevent violence from happening again. So we ask, if you can, to consider giving to the DVSAC this year. Together we can make a difference. Together we can end domestic violence and sexual assault in our community.
Wishing you a safe and peaceful Christmas and New Year,
Niko D. Johnson & Dorene Humphers
Executive Director & Board President
