The Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition (DVSAC) has served Nevada County in Northern California since 1978, first as a community group - the Battered Women's Alliance - and since 1980 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Initially known as the Domestic Violence Coalition, it was formed to offer crisis intervention and safehousing services to the victims of domestic violence and their families in Nevada County.
Within a few years, DVSAC also began offering counseling and advocacy services to survivors of sexual assault. The agency now offers a full range of services including:With the exception of the anger management and batterers' treatment programs, all services are free of charge. The area served covers western Nevada County, including Grass Valley, Nevada City, North San Juan, Penn Valley, Chicago Park and Lake of the Pines. DVSAC also cooperates closely with Tahoe Women's Services, who offer services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Truckee and eastern parts of Nevada County.

- Walk-in crisis intervention services and support groups at its downtown office between 9:00 and 5:00, Monday through Friday
- A shelter for women and children escaping domestic violence
- Emergency food, clothing, safehousing and transportation
- Individual and group counseling for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault
- Children's and teen counseling and support groups
- Legal and medical accompaniment and advocacy for victims
- Assistance with obtaining temporary restraining orders
- Outreach and prevention programs in the schools and community
- Referrals to other agencies
- Anger management and batterers' treatment programs
DVSAC is funded in large part by grants of federal and state funds from the Office of Criminal Justice Planning, and the Maternal and Health Branch of the California Department of Health Services. Other funds come from the county through Marriage License fees and periodic Community Service Block Grants, and from other grantors such as the Children and Families First Commission.Individual and corporate donors are also very important to DVSAC. The Nevada County United Way is an active supporter, and many individuals in the community support us with their time, and cash and in-kind donations. DVSAC employs more than 20 staff members and contract facilitators. It also has an active core of volunteers, who operate the after-hours crisis line, and help with office, outreach, and funding activities.The Board of Directors meets every month. Current Board members are:
