• There will be a $5 entrance fee to shop on Saturday (a portion of the money raised will go to DVSAC)

The family and friends of Sarah Donaldson-Burr, who was killed last year in Colfax, invite you to join them in honoring her memory.  A candlelight vigil will be held next Wednesday in downtown Grass Valley.  It is the family’s desire to share information about domestic violence and the impact it has on our community through this event as well.

Please join us on Wednesday, May 2nd from 7 -8pm in the parking lot of Grass Valley City Hall as we stand in support with the family and friends of Sarah Donaldson-Burr and stand against domestic violence.

It also provides opportunities for the community to be directly involved in supporting victims and survivors, their families, and organizations that provide crisis intervention throughout the year. Italy, 1997

A teenage girl was picked up by her 45-year-old old driving instructor for her first lesson. He took her to an isolated location, pulled her out of the car and forcefully raped her. Despite threats that she would be killed if she told anyone, the girl reported the incident, and the case is prosecuted. The driving instructor was convicted of rape and sentenced to jail.

Months later, the perpetrator appealed the sentence, and the case made it all the way to the Italian Supreme Court. The case against the driving instructor was overturned, and the perpetrator was released.

In a statement released by the Head Judge, he stated, “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans, it was no longer rape but consensual sex.”

Outraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament began what started out as a protest against the court case by wearing jeans to work. It began an annual international demonstration known as Denim Day. The wearing of jeans became an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.

We encourage the people in our community to show their support by wearing jeans  to work on April 25. It will serve as a visible means of protest against myths that surround sexual assault. Together, we can stamp out ignorance by awareness.

When you participate in Denim Day you:
1. Make it possible for more sexual assault survivors to reach out and find help.
2. Promote prevention through education so sexual violence doesn’t occur.
3. Encourage institutional and societal change.
4. Make a powerful statement without ever saying a word.

The Clothesline Project is a national campaign started in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. It is a visual display of art created on t-shirts by survivors of physical, sexual and emotional violence to express their feelings and stories of abuse and survival. The shirt is then hung on a clothesline to be viewed by the public as testimony to the problem of interpersonal violence and to let those who may suffer in silence know that they are not alone.

View Nevada County’s Clothesline Project at the Alpha Building (210 Broad Street) in Nevada City. The display will be up the entire month of April to help bring sexual assault awareness to our community.
