Smart Giving Techniques to Increase Your Support of DVSAC

Real Estate | Securities | Cash | Other Assets

An outright gift is one that has an immediate benefit to support the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition (DVSAC) a not for profit public foundation.  Below is a variety of gifts we can accept and possibly some ideas that may help you consider making gifts other than cash.

Real estate, securities, cash, and other assets can be given outright.  Many are surprised at the convenience of gifting assets other than cash.  Read below to learn about the tax savings that benefits the donor.

Real Estate Practically any marketable real estate may be contributed to the DVSAC foundation, provided the property is unencumbered.  Real estate accepted outright by DVSAC is immediately sold and the proceeds benefit the General Fund.  Our most important major funding goal is the annual campaign, however, we respect that some donors might desire to split their gift to support a variety of programs at DVSAC.

A gift of real estate may entitle you to a charitable deduction of the full fair market value of the property.  For gifts of long-term appreciated real estate, the deduction limit is 30% of adjusted gross income with a five-year carry-over period for the excess.  You can also bypass capital gains tax on the property.  Our board of directors and advisors would be happy to consider the gift of a home, rental property, vacation property, land, or other real estate in support of our combined work.  Gifts of real property must approved by the board of directors.

Cash Cash gifts are an excellent way of supporting DVSAC.  Cash gifts include checks, drafts, and money orders.  If your gift is mailed to the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition (DVSAC) before the end of the calendar year, simply list the gift in the itemized area when doing your taxes, you’ll be eligible for an income tax deduction for that year.  Gifts of cash are deductible for up to 50% of your adjusted gross income.  Cash contributions that exceed the deduction limit may be carried over and deducted in the following five tax years.

Other Assets For more information on other forms of major gift strategies, contact our Executive Director at 530-272-2046.

Securities You may donate stocks, securities and bonds to DVSAC.  This is a great method to support DVSAC and almost as simple as writing a check.

Long-term appreciated securities are those you’ve owned for more than one year and have increased in value.  Such a gift would entitle you to a federal income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the securities on the date of the gift, up to a maximum deduction of 30% of your adjusted gross income for the year if you itemize deductions.

Short-term securities are those you’ve held for less than one year.  If you itemize, you will be entitled to a federal income tax deduction for only the purchase price of the securities.

Depreciated securities are those that have declined in value since you bought them.  To gain maximum tax benefits from the gift, the foundation suggests that the donor sell these, take the tax loss, and donate the cash proceeds.
