Human Trafficking is the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the 21st century, ranking second after drug smuggling. Join us for a presentation and conversation on human trafficking with Nicholas Sensley, Chief of the Truckee Police, on Wednesday, August 3rd from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. It will be held at the Sierra Center for Spiritual Living located at 119 Florence St, Grass Valley. (Parking is at rear of parking lot behind the GV Veterans Building on Auburn St.)
- It is estimated to be a $9 billion industry. The US is one of the top three destination points for trafficked victims. California, New York, Texas and Nevada are the top destination states. Contrary to popular opinion, trafficking isn’t just limited to the sex trade. It also appears in the form of domestic servitude, sweatshop factories and migrant agricultural work. Traffickers use violence, fraud and coercion to compel women, men and children into slavery. Many of these victims do not speak or understand English and are unable to communicate with anyone who might be able to help them.
- 300,000 American children work as prostitutes in the US. 1.6 million to 2.8 million children run away annually in the United States and 33% are lured or recruited into prostitution or involved with pornography within the first 48 hours. And Nevada County is no stranger to human trafficking.
Presentation made possible by the United Nations: Focus on Women and Gather the Women.
