Wednesday, May 2nd at 7pm
The family and friends of Sarah Donaldson-Burr, who was killed last year in Colfax, invite you to join them in honoring her memory. A candlelight vigil will be held next Wednesday in downtown Grass Valley. It is the family’s desire to share information about domestic violence and the impact it has on our community through this event as well.
Please join us on Wednesday, May 2nd from 7 -8pm in the parking lot of Grass Valley City Hall as we stand in support with the family and friends of Sarah Donaldson-Burr and stand against domestic violence.

In the recent National Intimate Partner & Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, it showed that, nationally, more than nearly 1 in 2 women (44.6%) and 1 in 5 men (22.2%) experience sexual violence (other than rape) throughout their lifetime. The NISVIS survey shows that there are more than 2 million people in the California who are survivors of rape. These are people we know. It is time to end the silence and shame for good.
CALCASA (California Coalition Against Sexual Assault) wants you to know about a new overarching symbol to unify all people, organizations, companies and communities around bringing an end to sexual assault and domestic violence.
It is called NO MORE.
Like the peace sign, the yellow “support our troops” ribbon or the red AIDS ribbon, the goal of NO MORE is to raise visibility for these issues, challenging the stigma that surrounds them, and taking the first step toward broader social change.
We are saying NO MORE to sexual assault and domestic violence by using this symbol and sharing it with everyone we know. We hope you will too. If you have any questions please contact
nomoreproject@gmail.com.
DID YOU KNOW?
12.7 million people are physically abused, raped or stalked by their partners in one year?
That’s approximately the population of New York City and Los Angeles combined.
That’s 24 people every minute.
Because it’s someone you KNOW

Denim Day
All Day Event- Wear jeans on the 25th
March 6, 2012
Denim Day is a campaign to prevent sexual violence through education and public awareness. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Denim Day is a call to action for all people to come together by wearing denim as a visible sign of protest against sexual violence. By participating in Denim Day this April, you can play a role in the prevention of sexual violence. Every year we ask community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion and on April 25th to wear jeans as a visible means of protest against misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

Italy, 1997
A teenage girl was picked up by her 45-year-old old driving instructor for her first lesson. He took her to an isolated location, pulled her out of the car and forcefully raped her. Despite threats that she would be killed if she told anyone, the girl reported the incident, and the case is prosecuted. The driving instructor was convicted of rape and sentenced to jail.
Months later, the perpetrator appealed the sentence, and the case made it all the way to the Italian Supreme Court. The case against the driving instructor was overturned, and the perpetrator was released.
In a statement released by the Head Judge, he stated, “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans, it was no longer rape but consensual sex.”
Outraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament began what started out as a protest against the court case by wearing jeans to work. It began an annual international demonstration known as Denim Day. The wearing of jeans became an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.
We encourage the people in our community to show their support by wearing jeans to work on April 25. It will serve as a visible means of protest against myths that surround sexual assault. Together, we can stamp out ignorance by awareness.
When you participate in Denim Day you:
1. Make it possible for more sexual assault survivors to reach out and find help.
2. Promote prevention through education so sexual violence doesn’t occur.
3. Encourage institutional and societal change.
4. Make a powerful statement without ever saying a word.

bio:
Music legends aren’t born easily. It has to be just the right band, with just the right sound, coming along at just the right time. That band was Montrose, and that sound was heavy, melodic, no-holds-barred rock and roll.
The critics called them “a scorching outfit…” “incredibly impressive…” “part [Jeff] Beck, part Led Zeppelin, and three-fourths nitroglycerin…” “sheer rock and roll ecstasy.”
The original Montrose remains the stuff of rock and roll legend, the ultimate stateside power trio with vocals. The songs are a virtual greatest hits of American hard rock: “Rock the Nation,” “Bad Motor Scooter,” “Space Station #5,” “I Got the Fire,” “Jump On It,” and the immortal “Rock Candy.” The fans have been begging for more ever since.
But Ronnie Montrose has always followed his heart. Ever anxious to take his music to the next level, in 1979 he founded the trailblazing band Gamma, a group whose trio of ahead-of-their-time albums were an explosion of guitar and synthesizer pyrotechnics anchored by a bluesy edge
He’d battled cancer, and staved off old age for long enough. And true to form, he chose his own exit the way he chose his own life. He is truly missed, but we’re glad to have shared with him while we could.

On February 9, 2012, The Soroptimist International of Nevada City graciously donated $425.00 to establish the Steven Hauck Memorial Fund through Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition. The fund is established for the purpose of providing the children of families that have suffered with domestic violence with school and educational needs. The fund began as members of Soroptimist International Nevada City dropped their weekly change into a small bank. “When Steven (a son of a member) found out what we were doing, he decided to donate all his change he had collected since he had been recovering from an automobile accident.” said Cindy Hintz, SINC President. When Steven passed away a few months ago, his mother, Donna Hauck, brought the money to contribute to the fund. The members decided unanimously to name the fund raiser after Steven Hauck.
“Steven had a deep love for children and was very involved in his nieces and nephews lives,” states Steven’s mother, Donna Hauck. “It is a wonderful way to honor Steven’s service and his love for children.” The Steven Hauck Memorial Fund was established to provide children the opportunity to buy school pictures, pay for sports programs, and participate in other activities. “Through the partnership between the Soroptomist International of Nevada City and DVSAC, we are able to continue to offer resources for building healthy relationships and for healing the effects of violence in children’s lives. We are so thankful for this community group and the work they do.” says, DVSAC Executive Director, Niko Johnson. “After talking with Steven’s family and learning about the positive impact he had on children’s lives, we are honored to be a part of continuing his legacy.” If you would like to make a contribution to the fund or get more information, contact DVSAC at (530) 272-2046.
