If You Have Been Assaulted
Get to a Safe Place
Call the Police: 911
Nevada County Sheriff: 265-7880
Grass Valley Police: 477-4600
Nevada City Police: 265-2626
Even if you report your assault to the police, you do not have to prosecute. A police report can possibly assist the police in the future should someone else report an assault by the same person.
Tell Someone You Trust
It is important to get support - so tell a friend, a family member
or call our crisis line: 272-3467.
Preserve Evidence
Do not shower, bathe, douche, or brush your teeth. If possible, do not drink anything because you could wash away evidence. If you need to remove your clothing, place each item in a separate bag and take the items with you to the police or hospital.
Seek Medical Attention
It is extremely important that you have a medical exam after an assault to treat any physical injuries and to be tested and/or treated for any sexually transmitted diseases. If you are seeking medical attention within 48 hours of the assault, it is best to go to the emergency room. If it has been over 48 hours since your assault, make an appointment with a medical doctor.
It is important to seek counseling to deal with the emotional effects of an assault. At the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition, we offer free counseling for victims of rape and sexual assault. Our crisis counselors are on call 7 days a week/24 hours a day at (530) 272-3467.
